Making progress

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 8, 2012, 4:14 PM
News
Okay, probably not much progress, but at least I am no longer in hospital ^^;

Btw. it's funny when you use film editing software for more than 2 years, and than discover that there is *really* helpful tool that you've always missed on toolbar :XD:
I am talking of so called puppet tool in AE - expect a storm of 2D animations when I figure out how to use it properly :D

... and give me more snow! Damn it, I sooo want to make another winter themed animation with me and my dragon, and there is almost no snow currently in Lodz ^^;
Info

If you want me to model and animate your OC (no mater if as Request, Trade or Commission), there are two important things:
:bulletblack: You have to provide me with side view of your character as reference. In case of humans (and generally all humanoids with facial features) you also need to give me front image of head with all facial details visible (ie. no hairs on eyes)
:bulletblack: You have to agree that I rip textures for model directly from your deviations. Realistic or semi-realistic arts preferred. That way the character will look almost exactly as you imagine them and you spare me nameless horror of creating textures myself :)

I'll trade mostly for designs of characters and places. The problem with me is I have several characters with full bio, history, personality, but absolutely no clue about their appearance. So this will involve much more freedom for you than in ordinary art trade. The only thing I ask is that you allow me to freely build upon your part and adapt it to my use. I am going to create more meshes for my characters based on this :)
(And yep, this is the problem with my currently in-making dragon mesh: I am completely dependent on my friend's, ~Isvenah's free time for he is making me ref sheets :) )

I'll never give away source files such as models or textures. These are proof that I am creator of animation. However I can give you higher resolution version of animation done for you with rights to republish it or build upon as long as you credit me and link back to this gallery

As for collaborations, I thought mostly about something like that: [link] , but I am open for suggestions :)

And remember, I don't bite :) If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask :)

Another year passed by

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 16, 2011, 8:23 AM
Quick news
I am once again in hospital, yet this time with much less internet access. I will be offline for some time. Btw. mobile version of dA is scary o.O
News
So, another year of my life has passed by and I am 22 now :) The 2011 was a strange time for me indeed... If I count right, I am sick for more than 14 months now, with some moments of relief, and some others filled with hospital stays. I've been in hospital 4 times since May and I still don't feel right. I had to resign from commercial working too, so it was a pretty hard time for me (and would be much harder, shouldn't my family help me out).

On the brighter side, I finally managed to do one of my most dreamed animation :) It was very quick event, took less than 5 days including 2 days of filming for 40 seconds-long movie and as of so short production time I am very proud of the result :D
To Do

Drakan 10th Anniversary mod, beta testers needed!

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 4, 2011, 5:48 PM
Secret Santa (PL Only)
Jeżeli trafiłeś(aś) tu z linka w Journalu grupy Draconis to jesteś w dobrym miejscu :) (Upewniam po prostu tych co mogą mieć wątpliwości z powodu braku jakiegokolwiek innego info :) )
Beta testers needed!
If you
+ have a bit of free time
+ like Drakan so much that you won't be annoyed in long playing and repeating the same elements of game
+ agree to install Dr Watson (if you don't have it already) - it's Microsoft tool for gathering information about crashed apps which will be invaluable source of help for me
+ agree to install any SVN client (ie. tortoise SVN)
+ want to support Drakan develeoping :)

... send me e-mail with your contact e-mail address, hardware specifications (OS version, graphics card, onboard RAM) and nickname if I know you (if isn't obvious from e-mail address)

beta[AT]drakan[DOT]eu.

Beta tests will be closed, testers will have access to new Drakan patches (this is about fixing as many glitches in Drakan binary as possible) This tests will not be about Mod 10th (no next gen features yet, sorry...), but when Mod 10th closed beta starts (I think it'll be around december), I'll pick persons which help me out now :)

Every help is welcomed :-)

What is Drakan 10th Anniversary?
You may not know, but I am (with Kronikarz, who helped me out :) ) the creator of Drakan: The Order of Flame patch 445++, which allows the game to run seamlessly on modern hardware. We are currently working on mod for Drakan which will add many new modern hardware effects (such as normal mapping, full scene motion blur, depth of field, high res textures and many more :) ). It's done in about 55% now and is scheudled for release in Q4 of 2011 or Q1 of 2012. There is official web page for mod here, with some early screen shots and work in progress stuff.

Still sick

Okay, I must admit it - it's still not good with me. I am sick for 5th month now and still there is risk of returning to hospital. Damn, I am really mad as I start to believe that no one knows how to properly treat me, I've got 4th different medicine and nothing seems to be better than it was.

As for my projects, everything is on freeze now as I am very dizzy on new medicines and can't work properly on anything. I hope it get better soon, or else I'll be driven mad ;/

Getting back to normal... again

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 30, 2011, 1:43 PM
News
Whoa, that was hell crazy lot of time... I am out of hospital and I am slowly getting back to use my brain again. I am not perfectly healthy, and I still have a lot of work to do (heh, I've been absent for few months!) but things are going back to normal again. I'll be on sick leave for three more weeks, so there is chance I'll post some new animation in some near time. I am also re-rendering "Take the lead" YT version, it's done about 40% just 30 more days :XD:

Farming... ;P
One of my dreams finally come true :D I have now another PC, machine dedicated solely for rendering, an first unit in future rendering farm. With it I can finally begin realizing my other dream of creating much longer and more complicated clip, because rendering times are no problem anymore - I just "fire and forgot" rendering on node and don't have to resign my usual activity on my home laptop :)

Speaking so, I am currently working on one longer clip. There are two version of storyboard, approx. 1:15 - 1:30 minutes length each. The final version of storyboard will depend on... filming activity :) Yes, I want to play in my first longer movie and this is heavily weather depended - I need 100% clouds on sky for good lighting for live-shooting or professional lamps worth few thousands dollars. The choice is simple for me... :) The other problem is that I have de facto only one day per week I can spare for filming (and it's sunday), so weather must perfectly match the date... no one said it will be easy, through :) In case I won't be able to film sufficient scenes, I'll resign to second storyboard - it's very similar in term of idea :)

Stray Soul - Global Game Jam 2011

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 24, 2011, 12:02 PM
Life is brutal, and sometimes you cannot reach what you want.

I had to withdraw from GGJ this year for some reasons I don't want to talk. Let just say that too many thing screw up at once and going there would be final nail in the coffin.

Good luck and have fun on your work, Jammers :)

Global Game Jam 2011
It's less than week now :D

I am going to take part in Global Game Jam event (I prefer that name over "contest") as programmer. In 48 hours straight, thousands of teams of 3 or 4 peoples around entire world (there are participates from USA, Autralia, more than 40 other countries, even South Africa!) will try to create fully working computer game. It's crash test of teamwork with people you did not know earlier and your skills in this, as it may seems, mad endeavor. I am really eager to try myself ;)

Check location for your local editions of Global Game Jam ([link]). If you dream about making computer games and did not know where to start, sign in! You do not need to be programmer, games requires not only code, but 3D meshes, 2D textures, pixel art, music, design, etc. Some local editions even allow you to just come as ordinary player to just see how making games looks like from that other side.

"It's a deep, oxygen-less dive into the depths of the (game developing) industry, compressed into 48 hours. Survive it, and you can survive anything."
Clive Thompson

There will be livestream for entire 48 hours from polish edition (I'll post link here when it start)... :)

FAQ

FAQ

1. What programs do you use?

(this is question I get pretty often :) )
Most of my 3D animation were done in 3ds max, Adobe After Effects, Gif Movie Gear and VirtualDub. Sprites were done in Adobe Photoshop and Gif Movie Gear. Flash animation were done... well, you'll probably would never guess :XD: As for Flash games (yup, there will be some, when I finish 'em up), they are done in FDevelop/Flex on the other hand :)

2. Are you male or female?

The nickname is confusing, I know :) Last time I was looking in mirror I was still a male :)

3. What PC are you using for rendering?

I use my personal laptop, Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz not overclocked (heh, it can serve as heater already ;) ), 4 giga of RAM. I dream of having PC dedicated for rendering, but it doesn't seem to be likely in near future...

4. Okay, so what are the rendering times?

Too long :XD: Depending on animation in can vary between 2 hours up to even several days (that's right, several hundreds of full-CPU working hours!). And I wish to play Mass Effect in the meantime, so you know now why there aren't always full-quality Youtube version available... :D

5. Your animation has great problem/bug/element misplacement/etc.

I am not blind, thanks :) If you see this, than I probably saw that too, but I couldn't fix it up for many reasons. Ie. I could not afford second rendering time (in case very complicated scenes), or it would be much more time consuming over expected result. Let just say I am angry of myself every time I am forced to slip over such animation bug.

6. You are programmer?! I though you are 3D artist...

I hardly believe that too, but I just find typing thousands lines of code so satisfacting that I am doing this both at work and at home :)

7. But I can't believe you never wanted to become professional 3D animator!

Yes, I wanted. Very long time ago. But I made my decision and didn't regret it even once. I work as part-time game programmer and I really love my work :)

8. Game programing? Are your work available somewhere...?

Yeah, I made some indie computer games. Most of them never reach RC status, but betas where quite polished. If you are not scared of seeing amateur work, check my games :)

9. Have you ever dreamed of doing some longer clip? I mean, not few second shot, but few minutes-long movie?

I dream of doing such animation even now. I even started drawing some storyboard, and made few clips for my first attempt (two of them you can actually see in my gallery - care to take a guess which ones? :D ). Perhaps some day... :)

10. Your dragon design is ugly!

Hahah :D It's not any fancy design, I know. It's rather character archetype. I am working on much more detailed design, but I am progressing so slow (well, two weeks ago I scrapped fifth attempt :XD: ), that I really can't foretold the day I would complete it.

11. Do you do comissions?

No, usually I am overbusy at work and/or at my university, where I study computer science, so I cannot provide the timeframe that would be realistic for any paid commission. You can request me through, I sometimes do that, but can't guarantee anything :)

12. Do you do art-trades?

It really depends of what kind of art you would request from me. Generally I prefer scenes - it's much harder to convince me to made a mesh special for your character. It's just too much work, and I am not good at modeling

13. Can I use any of your animation?

No. I do not use an watermarks for the sake of my personal taste, but there are still copyrighted. Reposting it anywhere and using it in your work is violation of copyrights. On the other hand no one can forbid you to use some art (or animation) as reference, or download it to your personal computer and show it to your friends (as long as you don't publish it, which can varies as law of your country). When in trouble, read this. And remember:

In most cases it does not matter how much of the material you have used. Whether it's a single frame, a few moments of audio, a short clip of video or any other sampling it's still considered to be copyrighted and you still require the owner's permission for use.

It doesn't matter how you obtained the material, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.

It doesn't matter whether or not you've credited the proper owner, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.

It doesn't matter if you are not selling it or making a profit, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.

It doesn't matter if you can find other people using things without permission, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.

It doesn't matter if you've edited it a little bit or made a few alterations, if it's recognizable it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.

14. Okay, so what about stock?

Yes, I have some stock art. But this will be clearly marked by so - they are published in relevant category. They are always released under Creative-Commons. I use Attribution or Attribution Non-commercial version of license (check before using my stock in commercial work!). I will never publish any stock on share-alike license (it forces specific rules on end user, which is against of open source mind in my opinion). I will never publish stock on any other license. Attribution rule is meet when you don't claim that you are the author of stock art and when you link back to this gallery somewhere in art or it's description. You can publish it both on dA and non-dA.

15. Is there any list of your stocks?

Sure, see here.

16. When new animation will be done?

When it's finished ;P

Games made be me

Some people are surprised that I am programmer despite I publish here only 3D animation. That's right - animations are my passion and I love to do them, but my work, my career is not connected with them in any way. I "merely" write computer games. And I like that job :) I am working in professional company as part-time programmer, but I have also made several amateur projects which I released (more or less finished) to public. Don't expect next Crysis over here, these are the games that I made alone in the matter of weeks (or since the beginning of this year, in team with ~smoczyduch ); Some of them are good enough that I have no doubt about showing them out :)

Dark Wars

3D fantasy (with dragons!) arcade shoot-em-up game made from scratch in 5 days; Featuring only one level (but it is quite challenging), and has annoying bug with collision (so flames will sometimes fly through boss) I didn't have time to solve. Despite that it is really nice game :)

Download: [link]

Requirements: Windows 2000 or newer with GeForce 6 or Radeon X1300 or equivalent (Shader model 2.0) is absolutely minimum; Intel cards are not supported and it is possible that they won't work at all. Of course any faster machine is nice :)

Controls:
WSAD (or arrows) - move your dragon
Space - fire!

Logic Riddles

Random generator making... correct logic riddles! And written as single webpage (no external sources used, you can right click on link below, "Save as" and used anytime you wish off-line). Riddles are generated from scenarios (4 in Polish, 3 in English - last one is still untranslated). There are no riddles list, they are made from scratch each time you hit "generate" button. Page allows you to choose difficulty and tracks the time you needed to solve the puzzle and overall guess amount. I used algorithm described by Gibmaker.

Requirements: Any browser with Javascript enabled (tested on IE 6+ and Firefox 1.5+)

Magician's Apprentice

Co-made with ~smoczyduch POSTPONED INDEFINITELY, The VERY EARLY DRAFT (ALPHA) of 2D H&S similar to Diablo II - but with one subtle difference - you are playing only wizard class and... you can create spells for your character :) (Design them from customizable blocks like "fireball", "lighting", "explosion" - you can make series of lighting that hit the target, each causing explosion and each explosion firing addition fireball at nearby enemy - that spell would be very expensive in mana, but will devastate large groups of enemies. On single enemy you waste your mana with minimal effect so you'll need more precise spell :) ). As your character progress, he or she became more powerful, has more mana, knows more "blocks" and faces stronger opponents (or opponents resisted or even immune to some effects), so the player must constantly review his spells. In this alpha creating spells is not yet finished, but there is pre-created spell that will shot fireball which will cause explosion and fire few additional fireballs (if there are enemies in range) or even series of lighting (use in crowd rooms :D ).

Download: [link] (Newest alpha from 7th January 2010)

Requirements: Windows 2000 or newer with both [link] and [link] installed. IT WON'T WORK UNTIL YOU INSTALL BOTH OF THEM!

Controls:
WSAD (or arrows) - move your magician.
LMB - cast devastating spell!
RMB - cast alt spell (turn yourself to astral being and vice versa - when in this form you take only half damage, but you deal half to enemies as well. The only exception are other astral being - astral vs astral gets triple damage)
Shift - highlight enemies
Alt + Enter - turn to fullscreen and vice versa
F5 - hit, if like Roguelike genre (like ADOM or NetHack) :D [Hit again to turn off]
F6 - takes screenshot (slow!)
F7 - changes language between Polish and English (default is your system lang)

Global Game Jam 2010 - We've made it!

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 31, 2010, 7:42 AM
Global Game Jam 2010

I am going to take part in Global Game Jam event (I prefer that name over "contest") as programmer. In 48 hours straight, thousands of teams of 3 or 4 peoples around entire world (there are participates from USA, Autralia, more than 35 other countries, even South Africa!) will try to create fully working computer game. It's crash test of teamwork with people you did not know earlier and your skills in this, as it may seems, mad endeavor. I am really excited to try myself ;)

So far I've made two such crazy attempts: I wrote 3D arcade shooter in less than 5 days and I wrote demo of 2D isometric H&S in 7 days. But there I will have only 48 hours. No sleep, little eating, a lot of coffee. Count me in! :D

Just some advice - if you never before worked in Game Develeoping industry, don't sing in as designer. Designing is really hard work and requires at least a bit experience in some other area. Someone wisely said before: "You cannot be a beginning designer. You can be designer only after you've worked on some projects earlies, on different positions. You need to know what will work and what will not. Being great player with endless supply of great ideas is simple nothing. Almost any player thinks he has great ideas, vast majority of them is completely unreal, simple weak or impossible to realize"

"It's a deep, oxygen-less dive into the depths of the (game developing) industry, compressed into 48 hours. Survive it, and you can survive anything."
Clive Thompson

UPDATE:
Global Game Jam has started! :XD:
See us (Polish local edition) on livestream TV: [link]

UPDATE 2
First 12 hours have passed. We have (almost) fully working prototype (minimum graphic, but most of the core gameplay). People here are very nice, and my team is great and very skillful :) It was my first time ever I was co-programming with someone else (in every single project I've made before I was the only programmer). Great experience! :XD:

UPDATE 3
24 hours are gone! We are half the way down ;) Our game is already playable and really enjoyable. We are now adding level specific procedures (dynamic obstacles, The End mark, random map generator). Some of the graphics is also done. I've slept about 3 hours since contest begun but I am really happy of our overall progress. At 11:00 P.M. we're be presenting first working beta to the rest of the community ;)

UPDATE 4
36 hours! Yay, I am still at least a bit lucid... I've slept about 5 - 6 hours (in 2-hours naps) since the contest begun. It's beautiful! We have our gameplay already finished and fully working and now we are doing menus and some final tweaking and bug hunting. I am thinking also about implementing Pixel Shaders for Motion Blur (our game is in 2D), but I am so sleepy that I sometimes even don't hit the right key on keyboard and I really do not know if I manage to do that. Tomorrow... uhm, today at 3:00 P.M. the contest will officially end. I will publish the link to our game as soon as possible ;)

UPDATE 5
Eventually 48 hours have passed. So weird problems (KrakJam almost melt down it's wireless router during event), SVN server had crashed during programming leaving us without one of the most valuable tools, etc. But we manage to do it! See our fully working, completed game at: [link]
